The participatory art project within the framework of OPEN SPACES 800 for pupils

The participation project MY SPACES 008 was developed especially for schoolchildren as part of the art project, OPEN SPACES 800: Young people of all ages were invited to contribute to the themes “MY SPACE – MY PLANET BOCHOLT – MY UTOPIA HEIMAT”. 8 Bocholt schools agreed to participate in the so-called “8-wooden-board project”.
In the summer of 2021, the participating groups of pupils each received a square wooden panel measuring 800 mm x 800 mm (sponsored by Thomas Venhorst) on which to realise their artistic, visionary, intercultural ideas together – in either 2D or 3D. The pupils were allowed to decide for themselves.
The school project, MY SPACES 008, turned out to be a great success for the European and border city of Bocholt. It was remarkable what the children and young people created together, how much effort they put in and what thoughts they had about their works and the themes.
On 14 September, Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff opened the exhibition in the Stadtsparkasse Bocholt on Neutorplatz, which had made its foyer available for the occasion. The 8 works of art could be admired – and judged – until 28 September 2021. More than three hundred visitors were voting for the gold, silver and bronze places. Even if it was about finding the first three places, one thing is certain: all participating pupils and their artworks are winners!

The PLANET BOCHOLT experiment is realized with young people. Bocholt schools were invited to participate in the art project MY SPACES 008.
MY SPACE – MY PLANET BOCHOLT – MY UTOPIA:
Topics of OPEN SPACES 800 include:
- What does the city mean to me: home, place of living, place of learning, place of work?
- Ideas for the future of the European and border city of Bocholt
- How to make a city liveable despite a pandemic – despite distance rules, playground bans, visitor restrictions, money constraints…
- What is the importance of humanity and solidarity
The 8-Board project:
8 groups of pupils from 8 schools were allowed to artistically work on 8 square wooden boards measuring 800 mm x 800 mm. Thanks go here to Thomas Venhorst, who sponsored these 8 boards.
On the boards, pupils were able to realize their artistic, visionary, intercultural ideas on MY SPACE – MY PLANET BOCHOLT – MY UTOPIA together:
As drawings, paintings, photographs, collages as 3D built miniature models.
On 13 September, the finished 8-board artworks will be collected from the schools and taken to the exhibition venue. The SSK has kindly made the foyer in the new savings bank building available for this special exhibition.

Visitors are allowed to award points for the three best works of art.
